Paul Callaghan's Story
What I learned from Paul might apply to wedding photographers – but there are lessons for many professionals too.
Last week I met Paul Callaghan, a top wedding photographer. Based in Ireland he presents at leading conferences and of course is in high demand for his brilliant photography.
We met at Photokina – the major photographic show. He was showing what could be done digitally with a leading photo album design software package Dg Foto Art from Pxlsoft in India, a product which we market.
Here are some ideas:
Use software which is designed specifically for the most efficient for your business. The leading software in our industry is Adobe Photoshop. But that is far to complex and cumbersome for most wedding pictures – and not the best software for producing a book. By using the right software and the right degree of functionality he was able to reduce the time on his computer (unproductive time as far as a photographer was concerned) by around 80%.
- Improve Presentation, In Paul’s case it was by using artistically designed pages rather than a single page per photo. The latter was bland – or ‘old hat’ Despite Paul being a photographer of world standing, he was able to increase the price of his albums by 60% with no increase in cost.
- If you have a different product you can sell more. Often a wedding photographer produces albums for the bride/groom and the parents – and maybe a framed photo for a few other relatives. Make a good album and aunts and uncles, siblings, bridesmaids, grand- and god-parents as well as friends will want one too. This is even more so if the content can be changed it. So Paul sold a lot more albums – with very little extra work.
